POST APPLIED: AUTOMATION TECHNICIANS

Position Summary The primary role of the Automation Technician is to Maintain a safe working environment; Maintain and ensure the integrity and functionality of the machine control system for all machines in the product handling area, with specific focus on the PLC, Scada, HMI, variable frequency drives and other programmable or configurable electrical or instrumentation equipment; Provide technical support to maintenance personnel in order to resolve breakdowns in the shortest time possible; Ensure machine performance and availability is within the set targets for Key Performance Indicators (KPI's). Organizational Relationship • This position reports to the Maintenance Manager. Principal Accountabilities 1. Demonstrate a consistent commitment to excellence in human safety, insurance, and hazard management to safeguard human life and health as well as physical property and the environment and completing all duties according to applicable safety measures and published procedures, whether it be from the company or its client. 2. Ensure that there is a proper maintenance procedure for all automation related equipment. Conduct frequent inspections on such equipment and ensure that all are healthy and without faults. Implement steps and strategies to rectify any discrepancies. 3. Ensure frequent backups of programs, parameters and configurations on automation related equipment. 4. Edit or modify automation related equipment programs, parameters and configurations as may be required from time. 5. Perform advanced and extensive troubleshooting, preventive maintenance and repair activities; provide technical support to maintenance personnel in order to resolve breakdowns in the shortest time possible and return the machines to service in the shortest time possible. Perform such work as per internal quality control standards and in compliance with electrical code specifications. 6. As assigned, perform duties and develop skills that are not part of this position's daily responsibilities to provide versatility in order to meet fluctuating demands and technology growth. 7. Seek out continuous improvement opportunities and provide input and recommendations. When requested, lead continuous improvement efforts. Desired Job Qualifications & Experience 1. Bachelor's degree in the field of Instrumentation or Mechatronics with 3+ years' hands-on progressive experience related to automation, obtained in a manufacturing, industrial or production environment. 2. Diploma in the field of Instrumentation or Mechatronics with 5+ years' hands-on progressive experience related to mechatronics, obtained in a manufacturing, industrial or production environment. 3. A Trade Diploma in the field of Instrumentation or Mechatronics with 7+ years' hands-on progressive experience related to mechatronics, obtained in a manufacturing, industrial or production environment. A Vocational Qualification in a related field coupled with 10+ years' hands-on progressive experience related to mechatronics, obtained in a manufacturing, industrial or production environment will be considered. 5. Training, hands-on experience and in-depth knowledge of the Siemens S7-series PLC (including STEP 7 and TIA Portal). 6. Working knowledge of Microsoft applications and OS environment. 7. Working knowledge of LAN networks and serial communication. 8. Working knowledge of SEW drive systems and Motion Studio software. 9. Working knowledge of Profibus DP, CAN bus and ASI bus systems. 10. Previous packaging or bagging experience or experience obtained in a bagging and packaging or FMCG environment. 11. Knowledge and experience of other automation brands' hardware and software applications will be considered. Desired Skills: 1. Demonstrate proficiency in both oral and written communication in English to a reasonable level. 2. Ability to read and translate various types of drawings, schematics, blueprints, drawings, sketches, layouts, manuals and other specifications both verbal and written and identify components for effective troubleshooting. 3. Ability to use diagnostic and special tools such as but not limited to ASI addressing tool, Profibus- DP analyzer and Siemens Field PG. 4. Ability to perform complex troubleshooting on equipment such as palletizers, automatic bagging lines, electronic scales, electronic stretch wrap machine, air and hydraulic systems and conveyor systems. 5. Ability to start the machine and observe the operation to detect malfunction(s) of the machine and hand over to Operation department after correction of such malfunctions. 6. Ability to troubleshoot and repair packaging and bagging machine problems with competent speed and accuracy under time and delivery pressure. 7. Ability to work as an individual or as part of a team. 8. As assigned, perform duties and develop skills that are not part of this position's daily responsibilities to provide versatility in order to meet fluctuating demands for various types of work. Unusual Working Conditions 1. Exposure to extreme weather conditions.
